Statement for Media and Inquiring Constituents Regarding Social Media

The City of Cape Coral’s official social media pages are intended to inform the public about City services, promote community events, and share official announcements. These pages represent City of Cape Coral government speech and are designated as nonpublic forums. As such, the City retains full editorial control over the content published on its platforms on all official social media platforms.

By default, the City will disable comments on its social media where possible.

This approach is consistent with practices used by other government agencies, which may also moderate or disable comments to prevent misuse, misinformation, or off-topic discussions. The City of Cape Coral may selectively enable comments for specific purposes, such as during emergencies or public engagement campaigns.

If commenting is intended by the City to be enabled on a specific post, that post shall be treated as a limited public forum and the following policy considerations will govern the moderation of comments:

Any comments posted to City social media pages by members of the public are subject to the public records provisions of Chapter 119, Florida Statutes. Any comments posted by members of the public to the City social media pages will be subject to content-neutral moderation, including the removal of any content that is obscene, violent, threatening, pornographic, is unrelated to the intended topic of discussion, contains spam, provides links to third-party websites or videos, may be removed. The City’s social media pages are not intended as a venue or forum for the expression and/or posting of unlimited comments, videos or links for public convenience.

Alternative ways to communicate with the City remain available. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to:

  • Attend and provide comments at City Council meetings
  • Email the City 311@capecoral.gov
  • Contact City departments directly via phone, calling 311 or through the City’s website CapeCoral.gov

The City remains committed to transparency and open communication, and we encourage the public to use these established channels to share feedback, ask questions, or express concerns.
