Veterans' Preference

The City of Cape Coral, Florida, is committed to employing veterans and encourages military veterans to apply for posted positions.  In accordance with Chapter 295 of the Florida Statute, qualified veterans and certain family members are eligible for preference in the employment, reemployment, promotion, and retention processes of the City.  Please review the State of Florida Statute for additional information. Additional rules for Veterans’ Preference are outlined in the Florida Administrative Code and Florida Administrative Register FAC 55A-7.

Applicants wishing to claim Veteran's Preference must provide a copy of their DD Form 214 and/or equivalent separation papers, listing dates of service and type of discharge.

Veterans’ Preference applies to all City of Cape Coral vacancies, except elected positions, persons employed temporarily without benefits, heads of departments, positions that require certain licensure, such as positions that require the employee to be a member of the Florida Bar, and any other position classified as exempt under Florida Statute §110.205(2).

Please submit your DD214 and applicable Department of Veterans Affairs Service Connected Disability Letter(s) with your application or fax it to 239-573-3131, or deliver it to the Human Resources Department within five business days of application submittal. Who Qualifies for Veterans’ Preference?


  1. A veteran who has served on active duty in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, has received an honorable discharge and has established a service-connected disability that is compensable under public laws administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or who is receiving compensation, disability retirement benefits, or pension under public laws administered by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs and the U.S. Department of Defense.
  2. The spouse of a veteran who cannot qualify for employment because of a total and permanent service-connected disability, and the spouse of a veteran missing in action, captured in the line of duty by a hostile force, or forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power.
  3. A wartime veteran as defined in section 1.01 (14) F.S., who has served at least one (1) day in a qualifying campaign or expedition.
  4. The un-remarried widow or widower of a veteran who died of a service-connected disability.
  5. The mother, father, legal guardian, or un-remarried widow or widower of a member of the U.S. Armed Forces who died in the line of duty under combat-related conditions, as verified by the U.S. Department of Defense.
  6. A veteran as defined in section 1.01 (14), F.S., excluding active duty for training.
  7. A current member of any reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Florida National Guard.
